Position Objectives:

The Crested Butte Marshal's Office is the primary law enforcement agency for the Town of Crested Butte. It is our mission in partnership with our community to provide an exemplary level of peacekeeping

Job Summary:

Performs a full range of law enforcement duties necessary to ensure public safety, protect life and property, and enforce laws and ordinances.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides a variety of law enforcement services, including patrolling assigned public areas; observes, detects, and apprehends violators of traffic and other laws; observes and takes appropriate actions regarding physical hazards and illegal criminal activities.
  • Responds to a variety of complaints including, but not limited to, automobile accidents, robberies, assaults, deaths, domestic disturbances, suicidal persons, child abuse, fires, alarms and other such incidents; administers first aid in emergency situations.
  • Supports and coordinates efforts with other jurisdictions, law enforcement agencies, courts of law and Town staff.
  • Safely operates a variety of vehicles, firearms and other specialized law enforcement equipment.
  • Performs animal control duties as required.
  • Performs public education programs assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Equivalent to or high school diploma.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License or obtain one within thirty (30) days of date of employment.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification or obtain one within 1 year from date of employment.
  • Must be 21 at time of POST certification.

Background Investigation:

Employment is contingent upon the results of a comprehensive education/experience background investigation and a criminal history record check.

Medical Examination:

Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical and psychological examination performed by licensed physicians. A pre-employment drug test is part of the examination.

Desirable Training and Experience:

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices and techniques of law enforcement.
  • Municipal, State and Federal ordinances, laws and regulations.
  • Use of law enforcement firearms, tools and equipment.
  • Safety practices and procedures; CPR/AED, basic first aid.
  • Proper handling and storage of evidence.
  • Standard office administrative practices and procedures, including record keeping systems and the operation of office equipment, computers, and associated software.
  • Core Competency areas (not an exhaustive list): Animal Control, Computer Skills, Communication, Defensive Tactics, Firearms, Colorado Revised Statutes, applicable Civil and Federal Law, Municipal Ordinances, Traffic Ordinances, Tactical Emergency Casualty Care, and Officer Safety.
Skill in:
  • Safe and effective use of a wide variety of law enforcement vehicles, firearms and equipment.
  • Recognizing and analyzing problems, evaluating alternative solutions, making sound judgments and taking appropriate action.
  • Collecting evidence, samples and property.
  • Dealing with adverse situations firmly, courteously and with respect for individual rights.
  • Rendering credible testimony in court.
  • Maintaining accurate and legible logs and records of work performed.
  • Reading and interpreting ordinances, regulations and laws.
  • Using initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with superiors, coworkers, and the public; develop community partnerships.
